How Playboi Carti Became One of the Hottest Artists Out Right Now

From bagging groceries and working at H&M to selling out festival venues with a deal from Interscope Records, this SoundCloud artist has become one of the hottest headliners of the era.

Unlike most of these new artists that have been popping up out of nowhere, 20-year-old Atlanta rapper Playboy Carti isn’t just some overnight success. Carti began from dropping his first mixtape, Young Mi$Fit under the name Sir Cartier, to landing rapper Key! and Awful records as mentors while still in high school. Since 2014, Carti’s been building his fan base from songs on the internet to eventually landing himself a meeting with A$AP Rocky at SXSW in 2015.

What gave Carti his first breakout moment was his song “Broke Boi” which now has over 25 million plays. Stardom truly fell upon Carti later in 2016, with features on a few of Lil Uzi’s tracks along with a feature on “Telephone Calls” from A$AP Mob’s album Cozy Tapes. By 2017 Carti had already toured the country with some of the hottest names in Rap, and since became the popular yet mysterious phenomenon he is known by today.

Carti dropped his debut album Playboi Carti back in April, getting major buzz from fans, to fellow artists, to media outlets. Singles off the album have broken into the Billboard Top 100 like “Magnolia” receiving attention as a memeable anthem. With a new mentorship from A$AP Rocky and the success he’s already gotten from music to breaking into fashion and acting, Carti is in an atmosphere of success right now.

Maybe SoundCloud artists do have a future in the industry, if they work as hard as Playboi Carti that is.

P-Lo Drops Single “Always” From Up-And-Coming Project ‘More Than Anything’

Already known as the go-to producer for the HBK music group with members like Iamsu!, Sage the Gemini, and Kehlani; P-Lo is no bystander in this game. Providing back tracks for big name artists throughout the West Coast, along with out-of-town attributes in the past, P-Lo wants to now make a name for himself as a full fledged artist.

More Than Anything is expected to show a whole new side to his image. Coming off with his new single, “Always” is a catchy tune reflecting on the ups and downs of relationships. Fellow Bay Area talent Rexx Life Raj is featured along with CAL-A.

According to Fader, More Than Anything is supposed to show all the layers P-Lo carries as a human and an artist. Though the project is on the way, it has no release date; but stay tuned for more information.

Artists Unite and Concur at SXSW

During the course of this past week, Austin, Texas hosted yet another blow-out experience of the annual SXSW.

South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual conglomerate of music, film, and interactive media conferences and festivals usually taking place during the middle of March on Spring Break. It is a chance to come out and see your favorite artists perform and even get the chance to take a pic with them on the streets of Austin, but for those looking to network in the industry, SXSW would be right up your alley.

SXSW may be able to attract many heads with its headline artists, but the best thing about the festival in my experience is the opportunities it gives up-and-coming artists to perform, connect, or even sign to a label if the time is right (Palm Beach rapper Wifisfuneral signed to Interscope/Alamo Records at SXSW)!

Throughout the week you can see different artists from every genre coming out to the city using the excitement to promote their art, networking with others doing the same. Countless billboards and posters are placed all over the city, live performances on the street can be heard just walking by, promotional gifts handed out for completing social following tasks, interviews are held from bloggers and freelance writers; the whole thing makes you wonder why you’ve never attended sooner.

So if your an industry cat, or an artist looking for a chance at that next step in your career, I’d recommend to make sure your present for the festival next year. You can find the link to the SXSW website along with their complete Music Bloggers Guide below.
